Alan Deeley is a part-time beekeeper based in Burton Green, Warwickshire, who began beekeeping upon his retirement in 2015. After completing an introductory course offered by the British Beekeepers Association, Alan furthered his expertise through additional courses in Bee Health and General Beekeeping Husbandry. He now manages approximately 20 hives distributed across four apiaries in the local area, including his residence, an allotment apiary, the University of Warwick, and Temple Balsall.
In Burton Green, the bees enjoy a rich variety of forage available throughout the year, contributing to the health of the colonies and the quality of the honey produced. Alan's beekeeping practice emphasizes the natural quality of the products. Burton Green Honey offers pure, room temperature-filtered honey and wax products, such as candles made from pure beeswax, which are crafted by melting and pouring into molds.
Understanding the importance of pollinators to the environment, Alan prioritizes the sustainability and wellbeing of the bees over maximizing honey production. His approach includes regular colony inspections to ensure they remain healthy and to minimize swarming risks, a common occurrence from late May to mid-Summer.
Alan provides a critical community service by safely removing swarms from local properties. He encourages those who encounter a swarm to contact him for professional removal, ensuring the safety of both the residents and the bees.
